Booksmart

This razor-sharp high-school comedy, the directorial debut of actor Olivia Wilde, sparkles with wit and quotable dialogue straight from a top drawer that might also contain Heathers or Juno. Best friends Molly and Amy, played respectively by Beanie Feldstein (Lady Bird) and Kaitlyn Dever (TV's Justified) are straight-A students who've worked hard to get into the top colleges of their choice, but the good girls want to go bad and take a walk on the wild side. Thus, the scene is set for one first night of hilarious partying hard before graduation. The two leads are perfectly matched, volleying one-liners back and forth with believable chemistry, their comic timing the envy of actors twice their age. Working from a dream of a screenplay (a collaboration between four women writers), Wilde stylishly depicts the essence of female teenage life, with artistic visual flourishes and a killer soundtrack.
